Annie Ross, To Lady with Love (Red Anchor, 2014)
The whole album was recorded in one 4.5-hour session, and that shows, too -- there is nothing over-produced here, just excellent music from excellent artists, with a spontaneous feel. The album is a tribute to the legendary Billie Holiday. Tracks include "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You," "Violets for Your Furs," "You Don't Know What Love Is," "I Get Along Without You Very Well" and "Music is Forever." The liner notes are interesting and informative, and there is also a DVD with interviews with all three artists that offers some additional context for the music. I strongly recommend this for jazz fans. Even if you're not, it's a solid album. ![]() |
