Back of the Moon,
Fortune's Road
(Foot Stompin', 2003)

It's necessary sometimes to dig deep into the archives and find something that still sounds as fresh as the day it was first released. Back of the Moon's sophomore album, Fortune's Road, is one such album.

The young band from the Scottish island of Arran was active from 2000 to 2007, and this recording came smack in the middle of their lifespan. The lineup here was Gillian Frame on vocals and fiddle, Simon McKerrell on border pipes, uilleann pipes, whistles and vocals, Hamish Napier on piano, whistles and vocals, and Findlay Napier on guitar and vocals. (McKerrell would be replaced by Ali Hutton later in 2003.) Guest musicians are Duncan Lyall on double bass and Jonny Hardie on guitar and fiddle.

The band initially was known as Gillian Frame & Back of the Moon, but shortened their name just in time for this album's release.

Fortune's Road is a blast of songs and tune sets, including some originals that stand neatly among the traditional music found here. A reviewer would be hard-pressed to find anything to complain about -- except maybe that the band didn't hold together for just a few more years and crank out another album or two -- so just sit back and enjoy the music.
