Burning Bridget Cleary,
Pressed for Time
(independent, 2013)

The title track that launches Burning Bridget Cleary's 2013 album lets you know they still mean business.

Three-quarters of the the band -- Rose Baldino on fiddle, vocals and banjo, Lou Baldino on guitar, vocals and bass, and Peter Trezzi on djembe and drums -- is the same as it was when they released Totes for Goats in 2011. In the meantime, however, the quartet lost co-founding singer/fiddler Genevieve Gillespie. They replaced her with singer/fiddler Deirdre Lockman who, according to an interview with Rose at the time, was once her instructor.

But how does the new pairing work? One of the great strengths of BBC's previous recording was the interplay between Rose and Genevieve's vocals. By track 2 of the new album, Richard Shindell's "On a Sea of Fleur de Lis," Rose and Deirdre demonstrate that they have the vocal harmonies well in hand.

The CD has plenty else to recommend it, including a sweet rendition of Jay Ungar's timeless "Ashokan Farewell," the grim "Ballad of Tim Evans," the traditional song of jealousy "Two Sisters" and plenty of lively instrumentals. It's an all-around fine album, an ample reason to continue spinning some Burning Bridget Cleary to keep my Irish spirits bright!
