Ceili Moss,
Glad to Find You Well
(independent, 2003)

I can't find a lot of information about Ceili Moss, a Belgian band that was active from 1996 to 2015. I remember listening to their 2003 release, Glad to Find You Well, a long time ago, but whoever sent me a copy to review sent only a burned disc with a photocopied cover and no liner notes.

I recently rediscovered the disc, gave it a listen ... and then, after a few more spins, decided I needed to share it with you all.

According to their page on Soundcloud, Ceili Moss can be described as "acoustic Northern European folk-rock with guts and melodies, not afraid of colouring a bit outside of the lines." They draw their music from a variety of sources; again, according to Soundcloud, they owe their sound to "Celtic, Flanders, Scandinavia, klezmer, medieval music, French chanson, Eastern Europe, ska, Balkanbeat, kleinkunst, singer-songwriter, blues, original material or (mistreated) traditionals."

The band's still-active Facebook page lists 13 people who were, at one time or another, members of the band. I have no idea who was active when Glad to Find You Well was recorded.

But I will tell you this: the album is very good. It's a lot of fun. It ransacks its musical sources with instrumentation and arrangements that sound very unique to this group. Vocals -- presumably led by Laurent Leemans -- are boldly sung in English and ... I don't know for sure, perhaps a mix of Dutch, French and German? (Sorry, I don't have the liner notes to go on.)

And it's still available on Amazon, so you can check it out at your leisure. Be sure to listen to the first three tracks -- "Seagull," "Hot Asphalt" and "The Gael" -- to get a good taste of their style. This is quality music, people! Heck, who am I kidding, there's not a bad track on this CD. I am so glad I found them again.
