Dublin 5,
Live
(independent, 2017)

In my review of the band's 2011 album, Buy Us a Drink, I mentioned how fun Dublin 5 is at a live performance. The band captures that feeling even more closely with its 2017 release, suitably titled Live.

Recorded in February 2017 at Ramshead Onstage in the band's home base of Annapolis, Maryland, the album does exactly what it intended: It captures the energy of Dublin 5's high-energy on-stage shenanigans.

Sure, the sound quality isn't quite as good as you get in a studio, but it's pretty darn close. And it's a lot of fun to hear the band at work with an appreciative audience in the mix.

The band is Ray Murphy, lead singer, guitarist and Dublin native, along with Jenn Belle on fiddle, Gary Hewitt on bass, Jim Martin on percussion and Kevin Shook on drums.

The show kicks off with "Ramblin' Rover," then runs through an assortment of tunes including "Fisherman's Blues," "The Rare Old Times," "Whiskey in the Jar" and "Follow Me Up to Carlow." And, while I certainly lean toward the band's high-octane numbers -- like a no-holds-barred version of "Rocky Road to Dublin" -- full marks for a moving rendition of "Grace" and the album's closer, a lovely "Into the Mystic/Danny Boy."

They also kick loose with a rockin' version of "The Boys are Back in Town" and, of course, we can't not mention Belle's innuendo-laden "There's No Eff in Irish."

Dublin 5 is a good, solid band with a lot of talent and a lot of fun. Check them out.
