Trinity River Whalers,
Both Barrels
(independent, 2010)

The cover of the Proclaimers' classic hit, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)," is bland and uninspired. Recording it here was a mistake.

Otherwise, the nine remaining tracks on Both Barrels comprise a fun album of Scots-Irish pub-band standards. Listeners won't find anything that breaks new ground here, but it's an entertaining collection of songs, and if you are familiar with the genre, you'll probably find yourself singing along on at least a few of them.

The band, now defunct, on this recording is Marj Troyer (mandolin, guitar, lead and harmony vocals), Steve Harrison (guitar, bouzouki, didgeridoo, lead and harmony vocals), Michael Price (rhythm guitar, lead and harmony vocals), Rodger Harrison (bass, lead and harmony vocals) and Randy Christian (percussion, accordion, lead and harmony vocals).

Besides the aforementioned Proclaimers single, you'll find familiar songs such as "Raggle Taggle Gypsy," "Mary Mack," "Step It Out Mary" and "Jolly Rovin' Tar." The album also includes covers of "Portland Town" by Steve Romanoff, "Silver Sea" by Kevin Evans and Stephen Wainwright, "John O'Kelly's Brew" by Tommy Makem and "One Last Drink" by Trevor Lewington, plus a band original, "Doctor's Orders," a paean to drink by Troyer.
