Dazzle, directed by David Lister (Peakviewing Transatlantic, 2000) Dazzle is the story of an injured fairy, Crystal (Chantell Stander), suffering from amnesia and trapped in human form, and the chaos she creates for the humans she encounters. Crystal sits on the windowsill each night and listens as best-selling children's author Tom Nightingale (Maxwell Caulfield) reads one of his books to his 8-year-old daughter, Melissa (Charlotte Savage). One night Crystal is knocked off the windowsill, almost grabbed by the family dog, and crashes into a tree. She morphs into human form and wakes with amnesia. Crystal wanders out of the woods to the first house she sees -- Tom's house. Tom answers the door to find a nude woman who doesn't know who she is, where she lives or how she got to his house. All she knows is that she is his No. 1 fan. When a fairy leaves Fairyland, they must return within one week. At the end of the week, a fairy bounty hunter known as The Collector (Jeff Fahey) reduces them to essence (mist) and imprisons them inside a jar for eternity. Fairyland sends two gnomes, Odkin (Peter Bonner) and Bodkin (Big Mick), to find Crystal and bring her back before The Collector gets her. These little "Men in Black" do not know what Crystal looks like in human form, which proves to be a bit of a problem. Crystal and Tom fall in love, but she maintains that she must return to Fairyland or The Collector will take her. Tom races against the clock to find a miracle that will allow her to remain in the mortal world. The gnomes spend their time trying to stay out of jail and keep watch over Crystal. Poor Melissa simply hopes for the best. This is a well-written story. The strong writing laid a solid foundation for the movie. There is tremendous character development and growth. The story consistently moves toward the conclusion with no lulls, and maintains tension -- at varying degrees -- throughout. There are several subplots interwoven with the primary plot to keep the viewer thoroughly engaged. The photography and special effects are superb. The light show when Crystal discovers her powers are returning is fascinating -- an optical treat, for sure -- which made the movie truly magical. The makeup and costumes are fabulous. Although all parts were well played, I must single out Jeff Fahey for going over the top in bringing his character to life. His portrayal of The Collector is enough to give you nightmares. His appearance alone was unnerving and suggested danger, but the way he did his voice was chilling! He took this character over the top for a stellar performance. Dazzle is a family film of the highest caliber. If you've ever wondered about fairies, see this movie. It is a charming heart-warmer that will make you believe. |
