For Richer or Poorer,
directed by Bryan Spicer
(Universal Pictures, 1997)

For Richer or Poorer is a hilarious take on the rich becoming poor. It will cause you to laugh aloud several times. But, on the serious side of things, it is one of few films to feature the Amish lifestyle.

Brad (Tim Allen) and Caroline (Kirstie Alley) Sexton are among the richest of the New York jetsetters. There is no limit to their spending until their accountant embezzles millions and gets them accused of tax fraud.

The IRS freezes their accounts and assets and publicizes their federal arrest warrants, leaving them worse than broke and unable to get help from their so-called friends because they are now considered felons and fugitives from justice. Worse still, the IRS sends a top agent after them.

Inspector Lester (Larry Miller) seems somewhat burned out, but he is paired with a laid-back, easygoing agent, Inspector Hall (Miguel A. Nunez Jr.). That pairing alone is enough to keep viewers chuckling.

But when Lester shoots at Brad, Brad steals a cab and runs -- with Caroline in tow. The duo flee south through Pennsylvania, fighting all the way, but they wreck the cab in Amish Country. When Brad goes to get help, he overhears a conversation about relatives from a Missouri Amish community coming to visit, and he hatches a scheme to hide among the Amish until his lawyer can get this mess cleared up.

Let the games begin. The Sextons, who have never worked at anything except spending money, now find themselves posing as a man who is an expert at breaking and training draft horses and a woman who is an expert at sewing, especially making quilts. It's hard to say which one has a harder time learning to live the simple life, but Brad catches on faster, and soon Caroline is accusing him of having "crossed over" and "become one of them." She readily admits (whines) that she is domestically challenged and doesn't know how to do anything. She feels totally worthless here.

The IRS agents close in, the cousins from Missouri arrive, Brad's attorney works to catch up with the accountant who has fled the country, and Caroline has nicotine fits and chocolate cravings. The Amish community may never be the same.

Everything about this movie is top notch. The writing was great. The action will put you on the edge of your seat. This is acting at its finest. It doesn't get much better than this. And the photography is fantastic. It's like you are there watching everything in person.

Some parts of the Amish life are shown in detail here. The plowing is really played up because of the horse training, so you see the harness and plow in detail. You see a stump removal via horse. There is a lot of the daily activity of the women shown. Their attire is detailed with attention to their quilt patterns, which are utilized in their new fashions.

For Richer or Poorer is a comedic work of art. It will leave you laughing, while giving you a look at the Amish lifestyle. It is quality entertainment plus.
