The Gnome-Mobile, directed by Robert Stevenson (Walt Disney, 1967)
DJ Mulrooney (Walter Brennan), owner of Mulrooney Lumber, is taking his grandchildren, Rodney (Matthew Garber) and Elizabeth (Karen Dotrice), on a road trip through the redwood forests to Seattle. They stop for a picnic among the redwoods and Elizabeth meets a gnome, Jasper (Tom Lowell). The gnomes do not trust "dodeens" (humans) and Jasper has never talked to one before, but he has an emergency and desperately needs help. Jasper's grandfather, Knobby (Walter Brennan), has lost his will to live. All the other gnomes migrated when Mulrooney Lumber started felling the redwoods. Knobby was carrying Jasper when a tree fell and knocked them down a rabbit hole. Now, they are the last two gnomes left in the forest and there's no chance for Jasper to marry and have children. DJ agrees to take them to the virgin redwood forest near Seattle, but when they stop for the night the gnomes are stolen by Horatio Quaxton (Sean McClory) for his carnival sideshow, Quaxton's Fantastic Freaks. DJ calls his security manager, Ralph Yarby (Richard Deacon) and tells him somebody kidnapped the gnomes. DJ wants Yarby to send the security team to find them. But Yarby happens to be standing beside Dr. Scoggins (Charles Lane). He tells Yarby to take DJ to Dr. Ramsey (Jerome Cowan) at Five Oaks Sanitarium. DJ, Knobby, and Jasper are all locked up and they only have the two kids to save them. I first saw this movie as a child and loved every second of it. When I watched it again as an adult, I realized what a gem it is. I laughed until I had tears streaming down my cheeks. Geez, what a mess these folks get into. This was one heck of a super-duper writing job. The Gnome-Mobile was made back when there was a senior Walt at Disney Pictures. Their films were of the highest quality possible. This one is true to that standard. Everything about it is superior quality. The special effects are awesome! You have to see Jasper spinning in the bubble. And I love watching those nuthouse orderlies crashing their car ... one piece at a time. It even climbs a tree. Everyone should see The Gnome-Mobile. It is a timeless treasure that many more generations will surely enjoy.
