The Hunger, directed by Tony Scott (Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1983) MGM should be ashamed for releasing anything as pathetic as The Hunger. It does not belong in the horror genre. It is dysfunctional drama, but only because there is not a genre for "crap." A vampire's companion, John Blalock (David Bowie) is suddenly aging at an accelerated rate. His hair is falling out, he is getting liver spots and he is developing wrinkles. He goes from 30 to elderly in 24 hours. He goes to the research center of Park West Medical Center, where Dr. Roberts (Susan Sarandon) is doing research into adjusting the aging process. She does not take him seriously until it is too late. He dies before she can find him. Instead, Roberts finds Miriam Blalock (Catherine Deneuve) -- a vampire in search of a new companion -- and her life will never be the same. She is introduced to the vampire hunger. The music in this movie is odd and will often vibrate down your jaw from your inner ear to your chin. This is "vampire world meets heavy metal ... at full volume." Obviously, the producers thought that having Bowie in the lead or Sarandon and Deneuve in a romantic relationship would be enough. This piece of junk jumps around all over the place. It is almost like they could not complete one scene or thought before leaping to the next. The scene changes are abrupt, startling and disorienting. There is no continuity and it is physically tiring to watch. Likewise, the camera work just plain stinks! It is enough to make you want to scream. Do not waste your time on The Hunger. Spend it on a real movie! |
