Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire, directed by Stephen Boyum (Disney, 2000) If you think you have family problems, check out the kids in Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire. This family will leave even the most stoic viewer in stitches. Adam Hanson (Matthew O'Leary) is a vampire-crazy 13-year-old with all the normal kid problems in life. His mom Lynette (Caroline Rhea) just grounded him and he has a backstage pass for a concert tomorrow. His sister Chelsey (Laura Vandervoort) has a date tomorrow, but now she's grounded too. Adam convinces Chelsey that their mom needs to go on a date the next day so they can sneak out of the house while she is gone. They pick a man from the personal ads, email him to meet their mom at the grocery store, and then get her to go shopping at the scheduled time. A man named Dimitri (Charles Shaughnessy) meets Lynette and they make a date. When they leave the store, Adam's 8-year-old brother Taylor (Myles Jeffrey) sees Dimitri drop his groceries, turn into a bat and fly away. But nobody will believe a kid who has seen one too many scary movies. As Lynette leaves with Dimitri, Taylor's desperation forces him to call the vampire hunter shown on the cover of the local tabloid, Malakai Van Helsing (Robert Carradine). The race is on to find Dimitri and save Lynette. It should be enough to say that Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire is a Disney family film. Doesn't Disney always produce the highest quality family films on the market: sets, backgrounds, choreography, costumes, camera work, music and performances? The rockabilly music in this film is super. So is the dancing. The acting is great. Myles Jeffrey stole the spotlight with his "I can help" performance, but these are all well-known actors and no performance was less than brilliant. It is too bad that this movie did not lead into a series or sequels. This cast has such a strong chemistry together. I would like to see more of them in these roles. Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire is the perfect family film for a Halloween gathering or slumber party. It is a fun film for any time of the year and is an entertainment treat for horror fans of any age. |
