A Troll in Central Park,
directed by Don Bluth & Gary Goldman
(Time Warner, 1994)

Here's a cute cartoon for the entire family to enjoy. A Troll in Central Park is the age-old tale of good versus evil in a modern setting.

In the troll kingdom, only evil is allowed. Gnorga (Cloris Leachman), Queen of the Trolls, has a rule that no flowers are allowed. Her husband, King Llort (Charles Nelson Reilly) has precious little to say in the matter ... or any other matter within the kingdom.

Stanley (Dom DeLuise) is a good troll with a green thumb. When Gnorga discovers him, she intends to turn him into stone, but Llort tells her a far worse punishment would be to banish him to New York City, a place of steel and concrete where nothing grows.

Stanley does not land on steel or concrete, however. Instead, he smacks down in Central Park, where he meets two neglected kids: Rosie (Tawney "Sunshine" Glover) and Gus (Phillip Glasser).

Gnorga decides Stanley is too happy and regrets that she did not turn him to stone. She kidnaps Rosie to force Stanley to come back to Troll Kingdom, but Stanley is afraid of Gnorga and refuses to go back. When Gus tries to rescue Rosie, Gnorga turns him into a troll.

Everything depends on Stanley, but he is far too scared to even try.

This is a really cute film that delivers a vital and strong message about never being too afraid to try something and to always believe in yourself.

The cartoon animations are great. The facial expressions are as realistic as a cartoon can get. The movements are exaggerated life mimics, except for the ladybug. She was obviously mad all over.

The story is well-written and quite entertaining. It provides a strong backbone for the movie to flesh out. The backgrounds have interesting depth and heavy coloring for a visually-stimulating viewing experience.

A Troll in Central Park is an excellent cartoon adventure that kids of all ages will enjoy.
